Corporate Responsibility and SCIZOO

SCIZOO has been bubbling away for years while we’ve been looking for products that match our ethos, i.e. products that come from businesses who believe in the empowerment of others and practice social and corporate responsibility. The idea is good but finding products which we feel our customers will love, while doing our best to ensure they come from companies with similar views of corporate responsibility is not an easy task. So the years have galloped by without much progress.

Then out of the blue we see flashes of similar ethos coming from various companies. These companies are doing as much as they can to ensure that their workers directly benefit from the hard work they put in. In a lot of cases the workers are previously disadvantaged and disenfranchised people who desperately need an income. In some cases they are semi-literate women who need to earn money for their families or are couples working from home, struggling to make ends meet.

Further up the scale, others have thriving small home-based businesses and sell mainly through market stalls or tourist shops out in the wilds.

One or two of our suppliers whose ranges are coming to SCIZOO soon are larger companies who have not lost their sense of social and business responsibility, even though they are larger and more profitable organisations.

What this means for SCIZOO – and you

It means that we are finally able to launch the online store we’ve been planning for years. It means beautiful, mostly hand-made products for you which should give you joy to use or to wear. It means that the hard working craftsmen and women can hold their heads up, while earning money to help keep their families alive.

When you purchase a product from SCIZOO, you help to propagate a fantastic ethos – that of helping others to live better lives. What a fabulous thought. Every purchase you make, in effect, makes you look and feel good, while making a positive difference.

Jewellery Only?

Absolutely not. We have chosen to “light the afterburners” and get this site launched with two or three of the most exciting jewellery ranges coming from Southern Africa but we are not just a jewellery store. We are continually looking for products that align with the social/responsible ethos we believe in. Watch out for upcoming ranges outside the “jewellery” genre that will also excite you. We have some really outstanding products on the way. Keep visiting the site – it’s changing on a daily basis.

Where needed staff are trained in skills which will benefit them and help them become skilled technicians of their trade. This is many cases turns them into trainers, which helps create a continuous cycle of training and development for the business.

Help develop their staff

Where appropriate, part of the development cycle for staff may include teaching necessary business skills. This results in self development and builds confidence and their potential.
